Second life for solid waste in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Solid waste management in the city of Ouagadougou faces deficiencies ranging from strategies implemented for pre-collection to treatment. Some waste removed from garbage bins, collection centers, and illegal dumping sites in the city is intended for valorization. This gives them a second life as they constitute a resource and raw material. The objective of this study is to characterize solid waste in the city of Ouagadougou to analyze the socio-economic opportunities of their valorization methods. This study is based on documentary research and qualitative and quantitative data collected in 2023 from 505 stakeholders including households and formal and informal waste collectors in the waste sector. The results revealed that solid waste in the city of Ouagadougou is composed of a diversity of materials, some of which are recovered and repurposed. Similarly, valorization techniques show a higher practice of recycling (86.5%) compared to reuse and repurposing, practiced by 11% and 2.5% of surveyed stakeholders respectively. Additionally, 87% report benefiting from the social and economic advantages of solid waste recovery in Ouagadougou by meeting their vital needs.
